Universal Ambulance Service is proud to announce our involvement in the Hope Not Handcuffs initiative within Macomb County.  Hope Not Handcuffs is a collaborative effort between Families Against Narcotics (FAN), Macomb County Police Departments, Universal Ambulance, Superior Ambulance and MedStar Ambulance, along with other supporting organizations to help those addicted to opiates and other substances.  Individuals looking for help can fill out an online assessment or report to designated police departments and the Hope Not Handcuffs team will work to get them into treatment as soon as possible.

Duncan Walker, General Manager of Universal Ambulance, said joining FAN and Hope Not Handcuffs was a “no brainer.”

“I’m proud Universal is involved with this program. Macomb County is where I grew up and after spending much of the last 15 years in other areas of the state, I was shocked to learn how much of an issue prescription drug abuse has become. Working with Families Against Narcotics, local law enforcement and other EMS providers to help those that want it was a no-brainer for us.”

To make this program a success, Hope Not Handcuffs use “Angel” volunteers.  A Hope Not Handcuffs Angel is a volunteer that aid participants who are in need of help. Angels are available to respond to on-site requests for support, help with paperwork and provide support and guidance to program participants while a transport and treatment option is found.
